Bill Dowling, Houston Fireman, 2014 Grand Marshal St Patrick's Parade

The 55th Annual Houston St. Patrick's Parade
Produced by the Houston St. Patrick's Parade Commission
Saturday, March 15th, 2014 at Noon-Rain or Shine!
The Irish Salute Houston's First Responders: Number One In Our Hearts Always

2014 Grand Marshal: William "Bill" Dowling, Houston Fire Department

As many of you know the Houston Fire Department lost four members on May 31, 2013 in a 5-alarm motel fire.

Captain William (Bill) Dowling was trapped and severely injured in the fire. Captain Dowling was in critical condition and due to his injuries both legs were amputated.

Captain Dowling is a married father of 3 and he and his family are residents of the Spring area. His wife, Jacki is a PE teacher at Frank Elementary in Gleannloch. The fire captain is supported by a close-knit family with deep religious faith and ties to Houston's earliest days.

One of the first Dowlings to reach the city in 1850 was Richard "Dick" William Dowling, a red-haired Irish immigrant and an astute businessman who opened a number of popular saloons. Dick Dowling was a founding member of Houston's Hook and Ladder Company Number One fire department and was also involved in running the city's first streetcar company. During the Civil War, Lt. Dowling commanded an artillery battery at Sabine Pass in 1863 that repulsed a powerful squadron of union warships, according to the Texas State Historical Association.

Another ancestor, Richard Dowling, was a homeless alcoholic who found God and helped establish the Star of Hope Mission in 1907, one of the city's first ministries to the homeless.

Generations later, some of the family's youngest members, Faith, 13, and Foster, 11, have kept vigil in the John S. Dunn Sr. Burn Center at Memorial Hermann, praying their father gets well soon.

We Are Proud to Have Bill Dowling, a Houston Hero, as our Grand Marshal of the 55th Annual Houston St. Patrick's Parade

Greg Gallagher, former AOH member and Irish Society member, passed away on February 3, 2014. Surely to be leading the singing in Heaven with his 'Irish Song Sheets'. Greg Gallagher was one of the finest Irishmen to ever March in the Houston St. Patrick's Day Parade. He did not make us better singers, but he did make us sing! We, the Irish Society Marchers, carry on his Irish song singing tradition during the Parade. Please march with us this year and sing a few tunes for Greg Gallagher.

Gregory James Gallagher, 89, passed away on February 3, 2014.

Never could a person walk by without Greg smiling and asking, "How are you?" Never could he pass a downtrodden soul without giving to them. Generous does not seem adequate to describe this man. Greg was an exercise enthusiast. Whether playing basketball or tennis, sports were a part of his daily life until the day he died. Always dedicated to God, he especially loved his family and friends.

Greg is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Ann Bennett Gallagher, three siblings: Mary Herndon, Natalie Carol Pope, Charleen Knieriem, his nine children and their spouses: Katrina Cooper, Gregory C. and Carley Gallagher, Michael and Natasha Gallagher, Dick and Margy Price, Charles and Carol Gallagher, Matthew Gallagher, William and Kathryn Tamminga, Mark Gallagher, and Sean Gallagher, seventeen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by first spouse, Bernita Gallagher, parents, Charles and Marguerite Gallagher, brother, Charles R. Gallagher II, and sister, Sr. Eymard Gallagher, RHSM.

Greg graduated from the Naval Officer Training Program at Marquette University in Mechanical Engineering. After his tour of duty he took post graduate courses in petroleum engineering, which he applied in oil exploration throughout his life.

The visitation will be at Earthman Funeral Home Hunter's Creek, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas on Sunday, February 9, 2013 from 4:00-5:00 with the Rosary at 5 p.m. The Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., February 10, 2014 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road, Houston, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please consider Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17145, Baltimore, MD 21298-8451, The Covenant House, P.O. Box 1863, Merriefield, VA 22116-8063, or the charity of your choice.

Arrangements under the direction of Earthman Funeral Directors-Hunters Creek, Houston, TX.

*03/16/14 - Dick Dowling Statue Ceremony at Hermann Park

1:00PM

The far Southeast corner of Hermann Park at McGregor Drive

Key Note Address: "Dick Dowling and the Immigrant's Call to Arms" by Mr Andrew W Hall, Marine Archaeology Steward and author of 'The Galveston-Houston Packet: Steamboats on Buffalo Bayou'

Major Richard William (Dick) Dowling, C.S.A. (January 14, 1837 - September 23, 1867) Born in 1837 near Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, Richard Dowling emigrated to New Orleans in 1846 during the Irish potato famine. In 1857, Dick married Elizabeth Anne Odlum in Houston. By 1860 he had owned 3 bars, installed Houston's first gas lighting in his home and business, and was a charter member of Houston Hook and Ladder company No. 1.

During the Civil War, Dick was first lieutenant, Company F, Cook's Regiment, First Texas Heavy Artillery. He was in command at Fort Gri
n in 1863. On September 8 he held fast with only 6 cannon and 47 men inside the fort, despite rumors of a Federal invasion and orders to retreat. Twenty-seven ships carrying Maj. Gen. William B. Franklin and 5,000 Union troops sailed into Sabine Pass.  Dowling and "the Irish Davis Guards" shot so accurately that Franklin's forces surrendered in 45 minutes. The Confederate Congress called the Battle of Sabine Pass "one of the most brilliant ... achievements ... of this war."

The Dick Dowling Monument was Houston's first public artwork and was dedicated March 17, 1905, on Market Square. The statue was moved to Hermann Park in 1954 and rededicated March 16, 1997, after conservation.

-03/17/14 - St Patrick's Day at the Mucky Duck (updated info)

St Patricks Day
March 17, 11 AM

Advance Tickets:  $20.00
Ticket price at the door: $22.00

What we celebrate on St. Patrick's Day is the whole of Celtic culture, and a musical tradition that, over the centuries, has become as much American roots music as bottleneck guitar. The drums of western Africa are what gave American music its rhythm; more often than not, though, the melody is Celtic.

The popularity of Celtic folk music is either a testament to the timeless appeal of these sometimes haunting, sometimes hilarious, sometimes jig-inspiring tunes, or perhaps an argument in favor of the nebulous theory of racial memory.

Celtic blood-ties real, suspected and imagined have given many the impetus to learn the folk-arts of the ancient tribes; a great way to explore Irish music and tradition.

For the celebration, our entire property is covered under a big-top tent and we showcase traditional and contemporary Celtic music and dance inside and outside the Duck throughout the day. There is seating in both areas on a first come - first served basis.

With Steafán Hanvey

When: 7:30 pm
Where: University of St. Thomas
Scanlan Room, Jerabeck Center
4000 Mt. Vernon St.

Look Behind You! is a multi-media performance by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Steafán Hanvey that details how a father and son (both artists) have negotiated the personal and political landscapes of Northern Ireland.

Using image and voice, anecdote and memory, the performance showcases the prize-winning photojournalism of Steafán's father, Bobbie Hanvey, along with radio-edits of his interviews with some of Northern Ireland's best-known figures.

Steafán's storytelling complements and contextualizes his father's work.
