Mary Clancy will relate her life experiences growing up in
Ireland and describe her life with her husband, Paddy
Clancy, of the famed Clancy Brothers, a well-known Irish
folk band. She will discuss her research on “various
problems during and after the Second World War and how
people and families coped with these economically difficult
years in Ireland .” She will review changes that have
taken place in Ireland , contrasting her childhood with
that of her grandchildren’s generation. Mrs. Clancy also
will talk about agrarian culture in Ireland and her
experiences in sustaining her own farm, her life with her
husband and her years of “raising children, cattle and
horses,” all of which are “moulded around a life of song
and travel.”
Mrs. Clancy was born in County Mayo , Ireland , and
emigrated to the United States in the mid-1950s as a
teenager. In 1963, she married Paddy Clancy and lived in
New York , until returning to Ireland in 1968 to rear a
family and establish a farm. After the passing of her
husband, Mrs. Clancy created the Paddy Clancy Memorial
Scholarship Fund to sponsor American students to study for
one year at the University of Limerick Irish World Music
Centre . Mrs. Clancy currently is employed as a freelance
public speaker, engaging in talks at various Irish
festivals and public venues.
See you soon!
