Mary Clancy & Other Upcoming Irish Society Events

We have three outstanding events in the next two weeks co- sponsored by the University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies Cultural Outreach Forum and The Irish Society: 1) Tuesday, October 31: Mary Clancy from Co. Tipperary on her life with her husband, Paddy Clancy, of the famed Irish band The Clancy Brothers, and on her life in Ireland today; also sponsored by the Irish-American Cultural Institute (details below) 2) Thursday, November 9: The Annual Irish Gala benefiting the Center for Irish Studies with honored guests, Consul General of Ireland Sean Farrell and Betty Farrell, and entertainment by Marian Tomas Griffin of New York and Co. Mayo though Kerry Records (who brought us Ken O’Malley last March); Houstonian Hotel; 6:30 Silent Auction and Reception; 8 p.m. Dinner Contact Laura Dozier at 713-525-3118 by Friday, November 3, for reservations for the Irish Gala! 3) Saturday, November 11: An Irish Girl’s Journey by Kerry Records Recording Artist Marian Tomas Griffin, an evening of song, drama, storytelling and delightful Irish music; Cullen Hall, 7:30 p.m.; free and open to the public; no RSVP or advance tickets ---- Tuesday, October 31, 2006 Mary Clancy of County Tipperary, Ireland My Life with the Clancy Brothers When: 7:30 p.m. Where: Jones Hall, 3910 Yoakum, University of St. Thomas Free and open to the public; no RSVP or advance tickets Sponsored by the Center for Irish Studies Cultural Outreach Forum, the Irish American Cultural Institute and The Irish Society Mary Clancy will relate her life experiences growing up in Ireland and describe her life with her husband, Paddy Clancy, of the famed Clancy Brothers, a well-known Irish folk band. She will discuss her research on “various problems during and after the Second World War and how people and families coped with these economically difficult years in Ireland .” She will review changes that have taken place in Ireland , contrasting her childhood with that of her grandchildren’s generation. Mrs. Clancy also will talk about agrarian culture in Ireland and her experiences in sustaining her own farm, her life with her husband and her years of “raising children, cattle and horses,” all of which are “moulded around a life of song and travel.” Mrs. Clancy was born in County Mayo , Ireland , and emigrated to the United States in the mid-1950s as a teenager. In 1963, she married Paddy Clancy and lived in New York , until returning to Ireland in 1968 to rear a family and establish a farm. After the passing of her husband, Mrs. Clancy created the Paddy Clancy Memorial Scholarship Fund to sponsor American students to study for one year at the University of Limerick Irish World Music Centre . Mrs. Clancy currently is employed as a freelance public speaker, engaging in talks at various Irish festivals and public venues. See you soon! Lori Lori Meghan Gallagher, J.D.
