Celtic Music In Texas

ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1. The O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat will be held October 29-30 in Midlothian, just 30 minutes south of Dallas, at a wonderful camp and conference center there. There will be classes in fiddle, flute, harp, uilleann pipes, tinwhistle, bodhran, guitar, piano accordion, button accordion, piano, hammered dulcimer, Anglo and English concertinas, harp, mandolin, tenor banjo and bouzouki, and their staff includes some of the best players in the Irish tradition, including Liz Carroll, John Doyle, Jerry O'Sullivan, Roger Landes and others. Online registration is now underway. For more info, please visit their website at http://www.irishtradmusic.org/oflaherty.htm or contact the retreat director, Ken Fleming, at kenfleming@irishtradmusic.org or call him at (972) 238-8724. 2. If you didn't get enough at O'Flaherty's, or just can't get away that weekend, you have a second (if not as intensive) chance at music workshops at the Austin Celtic Festival November 5-6. For more information see http://www.austincelts.org/festival/workshops.htm 3. And speaking of the Austin Celtic Festival, the special hotel rate expires on October 15, so make your reservations by then! See http://www.austincelts.org/festival/accomodations.htm for the full skinny. 4. And as long as we're still on that subject, the ACF could use more volunteers. Stage management, ticket gate, ACA product booth, cleanup, you name it. It's the noble thing to do, but you also get perks! (Or is it perqs?) You get free admission for yourself & several of your nearest and dearest (6 names on the guest list), you will be fed and watered (or soft drinked--a food ticket and a soft drink ticket for each half-day shift), and get to buy a fest T-shirt at cost (which looks to be $8). (Sorry, we tried giving them away one year and it hurt too much.) Please contact volunteer@austincelts.org with your name, email address, phone number, the kind of work you're interested in doing, and what times you can (or can't) work from Friday through Monday. And now, on to this week's music!
