The group was organized in 1994 when students in dulcimer classes from North Harris County College and Houston Community College got together to learn tunes and to continue practicing the skills learned in their Continuing Education class. The group is made up of amateur musicians, and meets weekly to learn new music and polish up their tunes for performances. The director, Peggy Carter is a career musician who plays the hammer dulcimer and the Mt. dulcimer and writes the arrangements for this unusual instrumentation. Peggy is president of the Houston Area Acoustic Music Society that sponsors the group, and has featured the ensemble at many events that the Society produces. For 10 years the Society produced the Summer Acoustic Music Festival (SAMFest), a 2 1/2 day event in Houston which offered workshops and concerts of Acoustic music, with guest instructor\performers as headliners and local performers including Strings and Things featured in the many concerts. Strings and Things presents performances of American Music and music from the British Isles, and they have been in demand to perform for many community events around the Houston area, including the Houston Rodeo, the Museum of Fine Arts, the George Library in Richmond and the Ice Cream Festival in Brenham. They have performed at the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio, and in 2000 they toured Ireland, sharing our American (and particularly Texan) music in pubs, hotels and castles on the Emerald Isle. During the past decade Strings and Things has been one of the "anchor " bands for the Houston Area Acoustic Music Society's monthly "Acoustic Showcase" at Hickory Hollow Barbecue Restaurant in the Houston Heights. Visitors are always welcome at the weekly rehearsals at the Spring Branch Community Center on Pech.
