Irish Aires needs your help!!  KPFT is STARTING their WINTER Fund Raiser this week.

Irish Aires & KPFT need your support.  We need to pull our weight in raising funds to keep the station on the air. We have, over the long run, been able to do this because of your generosity.

A little background for those of you new to our list:

Irish Aires is the name of radio show broadcast on KPFT-FM (90.1FM in Houston Texas) and on the internet (bothlive and in archived versions). We are on every Saturday night from 6-7PM (US Central Time – Midnight Sat Nights in Ireland). We play a wide variety of Irish/Celtic music and provide information on local (Houston) Celtic happenings.

In addition to our broadcast which feature Irish/Celtic music, we regularly include listing of local Celtic events. we also hosts special guests to discuss issue of interest to the Irish & Irish/American community.

We also provide internet resources for the Irish/Celtic community. These include email lists, FaceBook (befriend Jay Dooling – the one from Houston), Twitter (follow wildrover1916), web pages that include info on Irish & Irish American interest (news, cultural happenings & local Houston area events).

We also have two other internet sites. They are:

While the producers (Pete, Bill, Emily & Jay) are all unpaid volunteers, the non-profitKPFT-FM station has substantial out-of-pocket expenses in order to stay on the air 365 days a year/ 24 hours a day. Electricity, staff salaries, license fees and maintenance are only a few of them.

For three weeks every winter, we change the format of our show (and send out emails like this) in order to remind you that KPFT, the Irish Aires radio show & our internet services (email, blogs & web pages) are sponsored by YOU.

IF you have joined our membership in the past, please consider rejoining during this drive; if you haven't joined yet, this is the time, join the Irish Aires / KPFT family.

KPFT is a non-commercial, community supported radio show. They except no corporate or commercial sponsorship. The receive a modest amount of support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting & grants, but 90% of their budget is provided by individual contributions (which average about $60 each).

Because of the need for your continued support, we need to ask you for your support.

As we have said before, we don't need people to give a lot; we need A LOT OF PEOPLE to give. Your individual support at any level will help the station stay on the air and Irish Aires to continue into its 28th Year.

Basic membership costs are $25 for students & people on a fixed or lower income; regular membership goes for $35 per year (voting rights accrue at the $25 level).

If you can give more, we have been the beneficiaries of some Irish/Celtic music CDs that we would like to give you in return for a $60 contribution (even if you can only afford to pay it out at $5 per month). If you can contribute at the $90 level, you will get two of two of our CDs.

But it is more important for you to contribute, no matter what the amount. Wide-spread, small contributions give our station support from the community of people who appreciate our programming and internet information.

The 2010 Texas Rose has died suddenly in a Dublin hospital less than six months after she moved to Ireland.

Adrienne Hussey had represented Texas at the 2010 Rose of Tralee International Festival in Kerry.

The community youth worker had fallen ill at her home in the Irish capital on Wednesday morning and died at Beaumont Hospital on Thursday night.

Boyfriend Eoin Treanor, her escort at the 2010 festival, was with Adrienne when she fell ill and was beside her when she died.

Her parents arrived in Ireland on Thursday morning while many of her fellow Roses maintained a vigil at her bedside.

Rose of Tralee Festival manager Oliver Hurley said: "It was with great sadness that we received the news of the untimely death of Adrienne.

"We extend our deepest sympathy to Adrienne's family, her boyfriend Eoin and to her fellow Roses."

Originally from Plano, Texas, Adrienne had strong connections with in Dublin and Waterford and worked with at-risk young people, including those on probation or excluded from school.

An Irish dancer since she was four, Adrienne had danced with Gaelic Storm and Frank Patterson and held a masters degree in social work from the University of Texas.

Friend Angelika Eleni said on Twitter: "Crestfallen to discover that my old friend Adrienne lost her fight for life. My memories in her company cannot be replaced."

We try to look the part from modern Highland games to historical festival to bellydance convention and will field a band of 2-6 players depending on the needs of the event. We sometimes play unplugged with just pipes and drums or with a PA into which we plug in a bouzouki and more bagpipes, flutes, smallpipes, and bombard. We jump around a lot. We're always in tune. We teach dances to folks who want to learn.

Robert Burns Supper

Burns Suppers or Burns Nights are celebrated around the world every January to pay tribute to Robert Burns and are a hallmark of Scottish culture. The Heather and Thistle Society hosts Houston's longest running Robert Burns Supper, where several hundred people gather to celebrate Robert Burns' life and the contributions he made to the world.

The Burns Supper ritual was started by close friends of Burns a few years after his death in 1796 as a tribute to his memory. The basic format for the evening has remained unchanged since that time. The Heather and Thistle Society's Burns Supper includes piping, the traditional address to the haggis, the Immortal Memory, and, of course, various toasts.

Plan now to attend the Heather and Thistle Society's 59th Annual Robert Burns Supper, Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Crowne Plaza Houston West. Entertainer Ed Miller will be presenting the Immortal Memory.

Tickets for Society members go on sale October 1, 2011. Membership dues must be paid in full no later than September 30th. Heather and Thistle Members, can purchase 2012 Burns Supper tickets by mail or PayPal beginning October 1, 2011. Non-members can purchase 2012 Burns Supper tickets by mail or PayPal beginning November 1, 2011.

Pipers, drummers, and string players performing Celtic, historic European, and original folk dance music and traditional tunes from down the ages and around the world.

Here are some of the people you'll likely see as part of a Brizeus show:

EJ Jones: Bagpipes, Smallpipes, Flutes, Bombard - EJ is a Professional level Scottish Piper in the Eastern US Pipe Band Assn, has studied Irish flute for over a decade, and makes the band's bagpipe chanters at his workshop in Asheville NC. EJ has been lucky enough to have played in folk bands since he was 16 and enjoys being the soundtrack to a beautiful day outside.

Al Cofrin: Cittern, Bagpipes, Percussion - Al Cofrin is a professional astrophysicist and engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. He is a prolific composer and arranger of folk melodies and has published two music books and many recordings with his historical ensemble Istanpitta. He knows the words and chords to every song ever written, ever.

Rosalind Buda: Scottish Bagpipes, Bombard - Rosalind Buda is a recent graduate of New England Conservatory with a Masters in Bassoon Performance. She makes reeds and dances around. Her music has a beautiful swing to it and she plays powerfully in tune. Someday she would like to have a small goose for a pet.

"Darbuka" Dave Machek: Percussion - Darbuka Dave is a folk percussion instructor and performer residing in Huntsville, AL who is known for his technical expertise and emotional expression. He played the goblet drum and tupan on our new CD! Dave was bestowed with a moustache +1 Ladykiller and is sometimes pictured on fire.

Richard Kean: Bagpipes great and small- Richard arranges and composes innovative tunes and makes Medieval drones for our pipes. He plays every bagpipe known to man and writes crazy tunes.

Teejei Brigham: percussion - Teejei Brigham is a percussionist, dance teacher, and graphic designer based in Atlanta Ga who has studied Middle Eastern percussion for over 5 years. When she's not playing the holy heck out of the drum she is being flirted with by the Na'vi from Avatar.

Abby Green: Irish Bouzouki - Abby Green is a professional bouzouki player and Irish language singer who just released her 2nd solo CD "Fig for a Kiss". She likes cheese enchilladas and cats who are the same color as her hair.

Wolf Loescher: Percussion, bouzouki - Wolf Loescher is a percussionist currently residing in Minneapolis MN and played many of the tracks on the Brizeus album as well as on EJ's 2002 release "The Willow". He has a separate career as a troubadour bouzouki/guitarist and plays with the group "The Sweet Coleens". Yes that's his real name.

Frances Cunningham: Bouzouki - Frances Cunningham is a mythical character from a children's book. She is said to live in Nashville in a little house with her love the bagpiper and their daughter, protected by a fierce white dog and 30 chickens. Frances is has the spirit of an angel and the bouzouki powers of a demon.

Harps & Fiddles

NTIF 2012 is the 30th anniversary festival. We started life on March 3, 1983, when a small group of like-minded musicians created a small gathering at Nick Farrelly's Lounge (generally called the NFL Bar). The event was known as the "First Texas Ceili." Ceili (pronounced kay-lee) means a visit or gathering in Gaelic and is understood to involve musical entertainment and dance. The following year we moved home to the historical Fair Park where we have been ever since.

In addition to being our 30th festival, we also picked the theme of Harps & Fiddles, since these two instruments, probably more than any others typify the music of Ireland. There are many varieties of harp found throughout the world, the oldest originating in Egypt some 4,000 years BC. The folk harp or Celtic harp is small to medium-sized and usually designed for traditional music; it can be played solo or with small groups. It is prominent in Welsh, Breton, Irish, Scottish and other Celtic cultures within traditional or folk music and as a social and political symbol.

The medieval fiddle emerged in 10th-century Europe, deriving from the Byzantine lira, a bowed string instrument of the Byzantine Empire and ancestor of most European bowed instruments. The best-known Irish regional fiddling traditions are from Donegal, Sligo, Sliabh Luachra and Clare.

The harp is also featured on the famous Irish light beer, Harp, the flag of Leinster and, prior to joining the Euro,. the Irish currency.

NTIF 2012 - The Scottish Village

The Scots have for many years been welcomed as guests at the Irish Festival. Their colorful Scottish Village is the place to trace your Gaelic roots on the other side of the Irish Sea. Check out the new Scots page in the performers section. Also note the annual meeting of Clan MacDuff to be held during the festival.

NTIF 2012 Performers

NTIF is recognized around the world as one of the premier locations for true Irish and Celtic performers. Over the past 28 years we have hosted some of the greatest of all Celtic musicians and in 2011 we welcome back some of our true friends as well as extending a warm Texas handshake to some that we have yet to impress.

As always we strive to maintain a balance between the headline musicians, the local and regional musicians, storytellers, dancers, educational workshops and cultural presentations. We trust that there is more than enough variety for everyone.

The national headline performers have been announced and full details are on the National page. Applications from local and regional performers are being reviewed during October and September and will be announced later in the year, along with dancers and other performers.

Richard E. McGinty

Richard E. McGinty, born May 24, 1941 in Galveston, Texas passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2012, in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Sidney; children, Richard D. and wife, Molly; Lisa, and David; grandchildren Stacey, Jonathan, Ashley, and Megan; and great-grandson Brody. Richard studied voice at the University of Texas in Austin and served in the US Army from 1963 through 1965. He was a former choir director and past President of the Houston Saengerbund, third Vice President of the Nord-Amerikanischer Sängerbund, past President of the English Speaking Union, co-founder of The Celtic Chorus of Houston, and 3^rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council #803.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Friday, January 13, with a Rosary being prayed at 7:00pm, and the Funeral Service celebrating Richard's life will be at 10:00am Saturday, January 14, all held at Niday Funeral Home on Beamer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Richard's name may be made to North American Singers Association Foundation.

Thank you all for your condolences. We are still grieving but finding so many reasons to smile along the way.

My grandfather went into the hospital yesterday to have a stent placement for his heart. During the "quick and easy" procedure he suffered from a massive heart attack. The surgeon and his team were unable to revive him and he passed at 10:54am.

Viewing and Services will be held at Niday Funeral Home located at 12440 Beamer Rd, Houston, Texas 77089.

Viewing will be Friday, January 13, 2012 from 6-8pm.

Services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 10am.

Richard E. McGinty, born May 24, 1941 in Galveston, Texas. He died today Jan 11, 2012 while undergoing heart surgery.

Service will be this Friday night and Saturday. When I get specifics I will pass them along.

Richard started performing as a singer in 1947. He studied voice at the University of Texas in Austin & served in the US Army from 1963 through 1965.

Married for more than forty years has three grown children and four grandchildren. Mr. Mc Ginty has appeared in Germany, Ireland, Russia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, and Austria as a soloist and choral conductor.

Along with his international performances, he had time to work with Houston's Celtic Chorus.

Sorry for the delay in updates as life was very busy for us all over the holidays. Here is a day by day summary of how far Richard's progress has come.

Thursday December 15 Richard was transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann, Rehabilitation Center.

Friday December 16 Richard was evaluated by PT, OT, and speech therapists at TIRR to gain a better understanding of his condition and what actions were needed to be taken in order to get him functioning at our goal of 100%.

Saturday December 17 Richard did really great in physical therapy (PT). He sat up and transferred from his wheel chair to an elevated mat with assistance. However, when he got back to his room had some respiratory problems and had to be transferred to Memorial Hermann ER where he was diagnosed with Aspiration Pneumonia and admitted to MICU for antibiotics and breathing treatments.

Thursday December 22 After a few days of treatment Richard was successfully transferred back to TIRR rehabilitation center to continue his recovery.

Saturday December 24 Merry Chirstmas Eve! The whole family went to TIRR today to visit with Richard. A few of us stopped at Starbuck's on the way to TIRR and brought our coffee into his room. Richard kept moving his mouth as if trying to tell us something but we couldn't quite make it out. We eventually asked him to write down what he was trying to tell us... Turns out all he wanted was a little coffee ;) He is definitely aware of his surroundings and not missing a beat!

Sunday December 25 Merry Christmas! We all visited at different times during Christmas Day so as not to exhaust Richard. Richard opened his presents but the greatest gift he received was a visit from Brody! This would be the first time Richard has seen Brody since before the accident on October 24th. What excitement and joy in Richard's eyes and Brody's too.

Monday December 26 Richard got a hair cut and shave today. It was a group effort by all his favorite ladies. Also, big step today... his PT had him stand several times for a short period each time.

Tuesday December 27 Brody went to see Grandpa again today. Great Grandma and Brody played kick ball while Grandpa was doing his leg exercises. Great Fun for both of these guys!

Wednesday December 28 Lucky for Richard, he had lots of visitors today. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful team of supporters. He feels the love and is so happy to see everyone!

Thursday December 29 Today Richard had a swallowing test. He is still unable to tolerate even thickened liquids but can tolerate liquids such as water. However he was putting in some BIG orders for for Wendy's: Single hamburger w/cheese, small chilli w/cheese, hamburger and small frosty. So needy haha!

He spent some time sitting up in wheelchair out in the hallway, interacting with the staff. Later Richard went to OT where they adjusted the headrest of his wheelchair and changed the left arm rest to better support his left arm which is still very weak. The OT made a splint for the left hand to keep it stable.

Friday December 30 Richard's youngest daughter Megan, and "pretend daughter" Catlin and his mother went to PT with Richard. They had him walk with assistance supporting his left leg and his head. One small step for man, one GIANT leap for Richard :) What a great day!

Saturday December 31 With all his practice and hard work, Richard can nearly transfer from wheelchair to bed by himself. He is needing minimal assistance!

Sunday January 1, 2012 HAPPY NEW YEAR! What better to begin the new year than a day spent with family. Richard sat up in the wheelchair and took a trip outside to meet all of us. We all enjoyed the Sunshine for a while but it was hard on Richard's eyes. Looks like we will need to get some sun glasses soon. He spent the rest of his afternoon watching part of a movie on his new DVD player that Santa brought him.

Richard would love to see any and all of his supporters. He is in room# 608 at TIRR Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center. Visiting hours are from 9am-9pm.

-01/13/12 - Clandestine at the Mucky Duck

Showtime 730 PM

Clandestine is hard-driving, toe-tapping Texas Celtic sound. They re-formed in 2006 after a four-year break, with the same brand of blasting tune sets and new songs. Al Cofrin, the newest member, brings cittern and another set of bagpipes to the mix. Percussionist and singer Emily Dugas captivates with her original song collaborations with Al, as well as her singular interpretations of songs in the Celtic genre. Piper EJ Jones and fiddler Gregory McQueen return with the full force of their individual musical energies. EJ and Al also join Emily on vocals, with many songs now set in three-part harmony. Once again, Clandestine is a regular feature at the Texas Scottish Festival and the North Texas Irish Festival, as well as their home pub, McGonigel's Mucky Duck in Houston. The band toured the US extensively and had successful stints in Canada and France before their break. (Former member Jen Hamel is pursuing her Ph.D. in Behavioral Ecology at University of Missouri-Columbia.) Now, Clandestine is poised to tour widely again.

Pipers, drummers, and string players performing Celtic, historic European, and original folk dance music and traditional tunes from down the ages and around the world.

Here are some of the people you'll likely see as part of a Brizeus show:

EJ Jones: Bagpipes, Smallpipes, Flutes, Bombard - EJ is a Professional level Scottish Piper in the Eastern US Pipe Band Assn, has studied Irish flute for over a decade, and makes the band's bagpipe chanters at his workshop in Asheville NC. EJ has been lucky enough to have played in folk bands since he was 16 and enjoys being the soundtrack to a beautiful day outside.

Al Cofrin: Cittern, Bagpipes, Percussion - Al Cofrin is a professional astrophysicist and engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. He is a prolific composer and arranger of folk melodies and has published two music books and many recordings with his historical ensemble Istanpitta. He knows the words and chords to every song ever written, ever.

Rosalind Buda: Scottish Bagpipes, Bombard - Rosalind Buda is a recent graduate of New England Conservatory with a Masters in Bassoon Performance. She makes reeds and dances around. Her music has a beautiful swing to it and she plays powerfully in tune. Someday she would like to have a small goose for a pet.

"Darbuka" Dave Machek: Percussion - Darbuka Dave is a folk percussion instructor and performer residing in Huntsville, AL who is known for his technical expertise and emotional expression. He played the goblet drum and tupan on our new CD! Dave was bestowed with a moustache +1 Ladykiller and is sometimes pictured on fire.

Richard Kean: Bagpipes great and small- Richard arranges and composes innovative tunes and makes Medieval drones for our pipes. He plays every bagpipe known to man and writes crazy tunes.

Teejei Brigham: percussion - Teejei Brigham is a percussionist, dance teacher, and graphic designer based in Atlanta Ga who has studied Middle Eastern percussion for over 5 years. When she's not playing the holy heck out of the drum she is being flirted with by the Na'vi from Avatar.

Abby Green: Irish Bouzouki - Abby Green is a professional bouzouki player and Irish language singer who just released her 2nd solo CD "Fig for a Kiss". She likes cheese enchilladas and cats who are the same color as her hair.

Wolf Loescher: Percussion, bouzouki - Wolf Loescher is a percussionist currently residing in Minneapolis MN and played many of the tracks on the Brizeus album as well as on EJ's 2002 release "The Willow". He has a separate career as a troubadour bouzouki/guitarist and plays with the group "The Sweet Coleens". Yes that's his real name.

Frances Cunningham: Bouzouki - Frances Cunningham is a mythical character from a children's book. She is said to live in Nashville in a little house with her love the bagpiper and their daughter, protected by a fierce white dog and 30 chickens. Frances is has the spirit of an angel and the bouzouki powers of a demon.

Fire Update

As many of you know, The Goose's Acre suffered a fire on the eve of November 21, 2011. Everyone got out safely and no one was hurt (minus our poor Goose). We suffered a lot of water damage on the downstairs waterway level. Truth be told, almost all the damage was due to water!! Since that dreadful night we have had contractors working tirelessly to get the doors back open to The Woodlands community. We have been partially open on the upstairs floor in the evenings and weekends for full bar service and a light snack menu.

We are happy to announce that this Friday, December 30th, we will be opening the downstairs to the public for full bar service. DJ Cooper will entertain you from 10pm – 2am and we will have plenty of drink specials all night long.

The kitchen will not be fully functioning for about another week but we will be sure and let you know when the full menu will be available.

New Years Eve at The Goose

Come ring in the New Year with your favorite people at The Goose's Acre. We have missed seeing and talking with each and every one of you and would love to celebrate the arrival of 2012 with you! As mentioned, our full menu will not be available, but we will have a light snack menu and plenty of drinks!! Loud Love will take the stage and play live for you 10pm – 2am.

$10 cover charge starting at 9pm gets you in the doors, live entertainment, party favors, champagne toast at midnight and breakfast tacos!

2012 is going to be a great year for us at The Goose's Acre and we have you to thank for it!
