She also will introduce some contemporary developments in the Irish theater and European culture that suggest the far-reaching insights of Friel's vision. Directed by Pat O'Connor (Circle of Friends), with the screenplay by Irish playwright Frank McGuinness, and music by Bill Whelan, the film stars Meryl Streep, Michael Gambon, Catherine McCormack, Sophie Thompson, Kathy Burke, Brid Brennan and Rhys Ifans, and is narrated in voice over by Gerard McSorley. Dr. Lowery is a Professor in the Department of English as well as the Director of the UST Creative Writing Program. She formerly served as the Cullen Endowed Chair of the Department of English. In more recent eras, genealogical research has been fostered and developed in particular by the Irish diaspora who have deepened our understanding immeasurably by quarrying non-Irish sources to immense effect. To the traditional tools of the historian, science has now added the study and analysis of human DNA, allowing us to take snapshots of family history for periods in which documentary evidence is lacking. For its full value to be appreciated, however, this DNA evidence has to be evaluated in light of surname history and linguistic etymologies of particular names. Dr. Catherine Swift is Director of Irish Studies at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, Ireland. Dr. Swift completed her D.Phil on the early biographies of St. Patrick. 7:30 pm, University of St. Thomas, Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Mc Gonigel's Mucky Duck 2425 Norfolk Street Houston, TX 77098-4113 (713) 528-5999 www.mcgonigels.com The Flying Fish Sailors began their journeys in 1988 performing Celtic folk, renaissance music and sea songs, then progressed to original songs, humor, parody and folk rock. No strangers to diversity, in their early days the band often played in punk clubs, opening for such notables as The Dead Milkmen, Live Skull, and Shoulders. In recent times the Fish have opened shows for the legendary British folk rockers Steeleye Span, Brother, Tommy Makem, and Altan. The bands' influences range from The Chieftains to Devo. Performing acoustic folk music and original comedy, the Flying Fish Sailors bring together elements from diverse musical styles to create a sound uniquely their own. Their shows combine modern and antique instrumentation, and musical styles from many times and cultures: A place where humorous original songs, Renaissance tunes, American and Celtic folk songs converge with classic rock themes, the blues, and even rap and heavy metal influences. ********************************************** -10/25/13 - The Dead Rabbits at Vintage Pub Friday, October 25, 2013 9:00pm Vintage Pub 13245 Jones Rd, Houston, Texas 77070-4439 Bringin' our version of Celtic mayhem to the North Side ********************************************** -11/01/13 - The Dead Rabbits at Grif's Pub Griffs Irish Pub 3416 Roseland, Houston, Texas 77006 ********************************************** -11/02-03 - Austin Celtic Festival - Headliner Legendary Paul Brady The Largest Gathering of Celts in Central Texas Multi-stage and programming of all things Celtic on the shores of Ladybird Lake.
