Re: The Wildcat Golf Course:

Water, Water Everywhere

Tee up on #1 and you think, "What water?" Be patient. On the Lakes course you start high. Its highest elevations – up to 100 feet – provide breathtaking views of Houston's major sports complex – Reliant Stadium, home to the Houston Texans. As you work your way down you'll see the water – acres of seemingly countless lakes. The Lakes' dramatic elevation changes can be rivaled by no other course in Houston. Water comes into play on seven of the Lakes' magnificent holes. Playing 7,016 from the tips, the Lakes is a bit longer than the Highlands. You'll enjoy navigating around the water, managing the Lakes rolling fairways and experiencing its fast greens. Dramatic elevation changes, water carries and stunning views – the Lakes will make use of all your senses and talents

Rated 9.3 out of 10 by Texas Outdoor.

"We loved playing the Lakes Course and hated to see our round end and can't wait to get back and play this fantastic course again." – Texas Outdoor.

Texas Outdoor obviously enjoyed their visit to Wildcat and round on our Lakes Course. Other comments from their review include:

"Some of what makes the Lakes Course a blast to play includes:
– every hole is unique and different from the previous hole
– strategy and shot making come into play on most every hole if you want to score well
– greens that are in excellent condition and include slope, tiers, and undulation
– the course will throw a little bit of everything at you - blind shots, forced carries, hidden greens and bunkers, split fairways, deep native grass, lots of water, contoured and rolling fairways, risk reward opportunities, and lots more that makes playing The Lakes Course fun and challenging
– huge elevation changes that require you to club up or down and offer stunning views of Houston
Wildcat's Lakes Course is one of the most fun and unique we have played in Texas - a must play! Can't wait to play it again."

-03/17/13 - St Patrick's Day at the Mucky Duck

St Patricks Day
March 17 starts at 12 PM

Advance Tickets:  $20.00
Ticket price at the door: $22.00

What we celebrate on St. Patrick's Day is the whole of Celtic culture, and a musical tradition that, over the centuries, has become as much American roots music as bottleneck guitar. The drums of western Africa are what gave American music its rhythm; more often than not, though, the melody is Celtic.

The popularity of Celtic folk music is either a testament to the timeless appeal of these sometimes haunting, sometimes hilarious, sometimes jig-inspiring tunes, or perhaps an argument in favor of the nebulous theory of racial memory.

Celtic blood-ties real, suspected and imagined have given many the impetus to learn the folk-arts of the ancient tribes; a great way to explore Irish music and tradition.

For the celebration, our entire property is covered under a big-top tent and we showcase traditional and contemporary Celtic music and dance inside and outside the Duck throughout the day. There is seating in both areas on a first come - first served basis.

Bikes, Trees And Leprechauns — 2013 Tour De Houston Falls On St. Patrick's Day

January 31, 2013 by: Florian Martin

This year's Tour de Houston will be even greener than usual. The annual cycling event will take place on March 17, St. Patrick's Day. And, proceeds will again go to the city's reforestation.

The drought of 2011 has left its mark on Houston, which has lost several million trees. To support the reforestation efforts, the annual Tour de Houston bicycle ride event started last year to use its proceeds for the city's Re-Plant Houston Program. After the tour had to be canceled in 2011 for lack of funds, oil company Apache Corp. signed on as the tour's main sponsor last year and again this year.

The company has planted 3 million trees throughout the United States, including more than 390,000 in Houston. Houston Mayor Annise Parker says that makes Apache a good match for years to come.

"This is not something where we can just plant one year. Trees have to be renewed and refreshed and replanted every year, so I think this is going to be an ongoing partnership, certainly with this sponsor, but if we have others in the future, that's going to be one of the things we ask for."

In a city where temperatures hit the 80s and 90s a lot during the year, more trees can also mean more shade for bicyclists. And although Houston is predominantly an automobile city, Parker says bike-friendliness is growing.

"I don't think the city of Houston has been given enough credit for being a bike-friendly city. We have an extensive network of trails, we just — thanks to the voters of Houston — embarked on a massive trail construction project, $200 million we're going to be spending on hike-and-bike trails along the major bio system in the city of Houston."

Parker also points to on-road bike lanes and the city's bike rental program. In addition, she says, not many cities have the luxury of a climate where you can ride a bike throughout the year.

The city expects 5,000 riders for this year's tour, which features 20, 45, and 70-mile routes. Those who opt for the short route might ride with Mayor Parker.

-04/11/13 – Dr Joseph McFadden on Queen Victoria''s 4 Visits to Ireland at Univ of St Thomas

Thursday, April 11, 2013
The Queen Comes to Ireland: The Story of Queen Victoria's Four Visits
Dr. Joseph McFadden, University President Emeritus and History Professor Emeritus
When: 7:30 pm
Where: Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon, Houston TX 77006
Free and open to the public

Queen Victoria visited Ireland four times during her 63-year reign as the Queen of England and the British Empire.   The visits took place in: 1849, 1853, 1861, and 1900. The purpose and results differed for each trip to Ireland.   None of the visits was a "state visit."  All were characterized as "private" visitations.  A characterization for each visit would be as follows:  1849: reassuring; 1851: enabling; 1861: peaceful; 1900:  a missed opportunity.  We will discuss each of these visits and their impact on Irish history.

Dr. McFadden earned his Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University in American History with a minor in Modern European History and Russian History.  He has traveled extensively in Ireland and taught at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland. He has been with UST since 1988, teaching as a history professor since 1997, and serving as president between 1988 and 1997 and again as interim president in Spring 2004.  Dr. McFadden founded the Center for Irish Studies in 2002.

These events are first-come, first-served.  Please advise us in advance of any mobility issues.  All lectures are free and there is a minimal charge for some concerts.

Parking is available for $2 in the Moran Center at West Alabama St. at Graustark St.  A campus map is available online under About UST at

We are one of Houston's most popular Celtic bands. Our mission is simple: "Give our audience a cracking good time, one that they will talk about for weeks." We do it by taking you for a ride on an emotional roller coaster traveling through time to visit the four corners of the Celtic world. We entertain you with toe tapping jigs and reels and rock you with mighty ballads that tell of times and events long past. We will throw in a few funny stories and some banter along the way, just for good measure. We invite you to come along and spend an evening with us; you will not regret it nor forget it. To contact us via e-mail use "celticvoyage@hotmail.com"

Arranged and confirmed for Saturday, 20 April at St. John Vianney at NOON. The celebrant will be Fr. Troy Gately, Pastor. The Mass will be in the Chapel and followed immediately by a light lunch in an adjoining building.

The address of St. John Vianney is: 625  Nottingham Oaks Trail; 77079. The location is best described as being parallel to Memorial Drive between Dairy Ashford and Eldridge. Come either direction on Memorial, and turn onto Nottingham at the light. Carmelo's on the corner.

Fr. Troy became quite friendly with Sr. Muriel during his downtown duties. He provided a couple of funny stories about the two of them during our meeting yesterday. He "admitted" that she had him wrapped around her little finger! He had not heard about her passing away. He was shocked at hearing this news!!

Well, THANKS TO HIM we got a Saturday Mass and at Noon.

Influences:
Too many to name really but here are a few. The Fureys; The Dubliners; The Clancys; Silly Wizard; Steeleye Span; Ladysmith; Pogues; Wolftones; Battlefield Band; Old Blind Dogs etc. Paxton; McTell; Gibson; Lightfoot ...the list goes on and on.
