-04/11/13 – Dr Joseph McFadden on Queen Victoria''s 4 Visits to Ireland at Univ of St Thomas

Thursday, April 11, 2013
The Queen Comes to Ireland: The Story of Queen Victoria's Four Visits
Dr. Joseph McFadden, University President Emeritus and History Professor Emeritus
When: 7:30 pm
Where: Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon, Houston TX 77006
Free and open to the public

Queen Victoria visited Ireland four times during her 63-year reign as the Queen of England and the British Empire.   The visits took place in: 1849, 1853, 1861, and 1900. The purpose and results differed for each trip to Ireland.   None of the visits was a "state visit."  All were characterized as "private" visitations.  A characterization for each visit would be as follows:  1849: reassuring; 1851: enabling; 1861: peaceful; 1900:  a missed opportunity.  We will discuss each of these visits and their impact on Irish history.

Dr. McFadden earned his Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University in American History with a minor in Modern European History and Russian History.  He has traveled extensively in Ireland and taught at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland. He has been with UST since 1988, teaching as a history professor since 1997, and serving as president between 1988 and 1997 and again as interim president in Spring 2004.  Dr. McFadden founded the Center for Irish Studies in 2002.

These events are first-come, first-served.  Please advise us in advance of any mobility issues.  All lectures are free and there is a minimal charge for some concerts.

Parking is available for $2 in the Moran Center at West Alabama St. at Graustark St.  A campus map is available online under About UST at
http://www.stthom.edu/public/index.asp?page_ID=3845/.  Alternatively, access www.stthom.edu, then Quick Links on top right hand corner of the Web site, look under On Campus and click the link for Maps.

-04/20/13 - Memorial Mass for Sister Muriel Clarke (info provided by Lyn Brogan)

Arranged and confirmed for Saturday, 20 April at St. John Vianney at NOON. The celebrant will be Fr. Troy Gately, Pastor. The Mass will be in the Chapel and followed immediately by a light lunch in an adjoining building.

The address of St. John Vianney is: 625  Nottingham Oaks Trail; 77079. The location is best described as being parallel to Memorial Drive between Dairy Ashford and Eldridge. Come either direction on Memorial, and turn onto Nottingham at the light. Carmelo's on the corner.

Fr. Troy became quite friendly with Sr. Muriel during his downtown duties. He provided a couple of funny stories about the two of them during our meeting yesterday. He "admitted" that she had him wrapped around her little finger! He had not heard about her passing away. He was shocked at hearing this news!!

Jiggernaut
May 30
730 PM

Advance Tickets:  $20.00

Ticket price at the door: $22.00

Preferred seating for dinner guests.

Jiggernaut is not your typical Celtic band, nor are they your typical rock band. Formed in 2000, Jiggernaut is a powerful combination of Celtic, rock and folk music. Drawing from years of experience playing rock and roll, and blues the rhythm section lays down a solid foundation that allows the bagpipes and vocals to soar.

A live Jiggernaut performance is passionate, energetic and always fun. Jiggernaut is the rare band that appeals to audiences from six to sixty, their tunes and songs tell the ancient stories and teach lessons of today's world all in a style that is entirely their own.

(About 'The Well') "One of the finest recordings of the last 10 years...songs of Deanna's composing that you will agree are sure to become classics in traditional Celtic music." - Jack Baker, Irish American News

"Jiggernaut's music is a confident, brash, fiery mix of Scottish and Irish influences and American blue-collar stadium rock...like a head-on collision of the Tannahill Weavers and Runrig....an outfit worth keeping more than one eye on."  - John O'Regan, Irish Music Magazine

"Jiggernaut is that rare band that can have you bopping at a club or jigging on the heath. What's more...they can do it not only on the same song but somehow at the same time." - Houston Press

Clandestine is hard-driving, toe-tapping Texas Celtic sound. They re-formed in 2006 after a four-year break, with the same brand of blasting tune sets and new songs. Al Cofrin, the newest member, brings cittern and another set of bagpipes to the mix.

Percussionist and singer Emily Dugas captivates with her original song collaborations with Al, as well as her singular interpretations of songs in the Celtic genre.

Piper EJ Jones and fiddler Gregory McQueen return with the full force of their individual musical energies. EJ and Al also join Emily on vocals, with many songs now set in three-part harmony.

Once again, Clandestine is a regular feature at the Texas Scottish Festival and the North Texas Irish Festival, as well as their home pub, McGonigel's Mucky Duck in Houston.
