-04/21 : 05/04/12 - Houston Grand Opera: Gaetano Donizetti: MARY STUART

Saturday April 21, 2012 - Friday May 4, 2012

Brown Theater,
Wortham Theater Center,
501 Texas, Houston, TX 77002

Gaetano Donizetti: MARY STUART
April 21, 7:30 p.m. | April 27, 7:30 p.m. | April 29, 2 p.m. | May 2, 7:30 p.m. | May 4, 7:30 p.m.

Brown Theater | Sung in Italian with English Surtitles

The performance lasts approximately 2 hours, 40 minutes, including one intermission.
Performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. end at approximately 10:10 p.m., with one intermission.
Performances beginning at 2:00 p.m. end at approximately 4:40 p.m., with one intermission.

This story of regal cousins, Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I—rivals for the crown and the same nobleman's love—delivers fascinating historical drama.

Elizabeth has imprisoned Mary, suspecting her of treason, but the Duke of Leicester, her advisor and Mary's lover, convinces the queen to meet her cousin; tempers soon surface and rage out of control. Mary, condemned to death, faces her demise with great dignity.

Spectacular vocal fireworks and bel canto singing are hallmarks of Donizetti's tragedy.

"DiDonato's voice is at present nothing less than 24-carat gold." -The Times, London

Friday & Sat, April 27 & 28, 2012
7:00pm until 10:00pm

BRIAN McNEILL

A career spanning more than 40 years has established Brian as one of the most acclaimed forces in Scottish music. He has been described as 'Scotland's most meaningful contemporary songwriter' (The Scotsman); add to that his work and influence as performer, composer, producer, teacher, musical director, band leader, novelist and interpreter of Scotland's past, present and future and you have a man who has never stood still. He has performed around the globe, both as a soloist and with some of the era's most influential bands, including Battlefield Band, which he founded in 1969.

Brian is a multi instrumentalist – chiefly fiddle, bouzouki, mandocello, guitars and concertina – and the importance of his songwriting has long been recognised with such songs as The Yew Tree, The Lads O' The Fair, The Snows of France and Holland, Strong Women Rule Us All With Their Tears, Any Mick'll Do and No Gods and Precious Few Heroes.

His audio visual shows, The Back O' The North Wind, about Scottish emigration to America, and the sequel, The Baltic Tae Byzantium, exploring the influence of the Scots in Europe, have won wide critical acclaim. His continuing connection with America's Lone Star State led to him being created an honorary Texan by the then Governor George W. Bush.

For six years Brian was Head of Scottish Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. This year sees the publication of Brian's third novel '…In The Grass'.

Houston's newest Irish band combines flute, fiddle, accordion, vocals, and guitar for a vibrant rendition of the energetic traditional dance music and songs of Ireland.

After many years of playing sessions together, the band members realized they share the same mindset, approach, and love for traditional Irish music. Thus they have created a band that remains true to tradition, yet presents the music in a creative and entertaining manner.
The Jig is Up! features the flute playing of Larry Mallette, whose 20 years in the tradition has made him the band's resident musical historian.

The band's fantastic fiddle player, Diehl Moran, provides both grace and drive to the music. Judd Heartsill's pulsive accordion and melodeon playing fills out the group's big sound and helps to supply the "nyah" in the dance tunes.

They are joined by Matt Lewis, who solidifies the arrangements with his rhythmic guitar playing and lends harmonies to enhance the vocals. Robert Shaddox, with his clear tenor voice, is the band's main vocalist and accompanies many tune sets with the bodhrán (Irish frame drum).
