SUSAN HIRTZ
has been on the news lately re: safety issues for children; Rafael Enriquez mentioned tonight that he heard her on TV and Radio with safety suggestions re: drowning. A google search resulted in the following:
Houston Chronicle article quoting Susan
excerpt:
This year's 12th victim was a 4-year-old boy, who died Friday in a pond in Santa Fe. Three other children who suffered brain damage from near-drownings this year are now at Texas Children's Hospital, said Susan Hirtz, manager of the Texas Children’s Center for Childhood Injury Prevention. The number of children lost to drowning in the area has increased every year since 2002, according to Hirtz.

ENGLISH SESSION HOSTED BY FISH & CHIPS JULY 5
Dan Worrall wrote in part: "The next session, Wednesday, July 5, 7pm, will again feature our Scottish dancer friends; the first of these tune/dance sessions last month was a lot of fun, so plan to be there! . . . next session's new tunes have a distinctly American slant, as befits the day after the Fourth of July. I'm hoping that most of you know most of these new tunes already, and we can tear into a few of them for the Virginia Reel for the dancers.
A new and welcome wrinkle on things is that Dianna Shipman, of the Scottish Dancers, has VERY kindly put our tune list, all the sheet music, and the song lyrics of songs we have done to date in the Session on the website she earlier built for our "Fish and Chips" English band ( http://home.att.net/~ceilidhmusic/FishChips.htm ). Many thanks, Dianna! At that site you should be able to find just about everything we are playing at these sessions, either in sheet music or in easy web links. This week's American reels, for example, are shown on the tune list there with links to Mike Head's ContraDan music site, from where they can be easily printed. Check it out! . . .
One more note on those Irish tunes. The music for [Irish tunes] can be found on many sites, one of which is: http://www.norbeck.nu/abc/ .
On the song front, thanks Emily for introducing a few new songs...which I didn't remember to note down the names of. Let's try them again next time. And let's try Pleasant and Delightful once more too...there are some great harmonists amongst you all. And Julian has been going over the Watercress Girl...let's not forget that. So much music, so little time!
Looking forward to seeing you for some Virginia Reels......
Dan

SCOTTISH CAT SETS WORLD RECORD
A SCOTTISH cat is set to be crowned the oldest in the world, having barely survived birth. Gloria, 26 - about 97 in human years -
has claimed the title after a cat in Texas died aged 37 two years ago.
Now the Guinness Book of World Records is to recognise Gloria's claim as the oldest of the cat world. Her owner, Maggie McQuilkin,
said: "She's in perfect health. "You would never know what age she was and she is still as active as ever. I don't think she is going anywhere."
Gloria started life as a feral cat, born in an abandoned car in her home town of Gourock, Inverclyde. Mrs McQuilkin took in Gloria
and her brother, Inky, who died some time ago.

ROBOTIC PIPER McBLARE
Not a bad piper ... for a robot
WHAT looks, acts and sounds like a bagpiper ... but isn't?
A robotic piper that plays with your eyes closed makes sounds remarkably similar to the real thing. Take a listen.
(posted by Max Triola)
http://heritage.scotsman.com/ingenuity.cfm?id=910372006
excerpts from the article:
IT IS enough to make traditional Scottish bagpipe aficionados choke on their chanters and mutter darkly that "it could only happen in America".
When students of computer science graduated last year from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, they walked on stage to receive their degrees to the skirl of the pipes playing good old-fashioned Scottish tunes.
But this was bagpipe music with a difference. There was no piper to "screw the pipes and gart them skirl" as Robert Burns envisioned Auld Nick in his epic poem Tam O'Shanter, no human to "up and gie them a blaw, a blaw", in the words of songwriter Lady Carolina Nairne.
